University of Cologne Global Study Program


The Cologne Global Study Program (CGSP) is an exclusive offer for Exchange Students from non-European partner universities.

It combines English-taught  courses on Contemporary European Studies and German-as-a-Foreign Language courses.

Students can enroll in the program for either one or two semesters, earning a  Certificate of Contemporary European Studies after one semester or an Advanced Certificate of Contemporary European Studies after two semesters.

1. Core courses

The core courses cover content such as the structure of EU-Institutions, the process of European Policy Making, Legal Systems, Contemporary European History etc. Core courses are tailored specifically for this program and take into consideration the non-European background of the participants. However, all courses are open to German students as well, who can enroll as part of their interdisciplinary modules. This creates a mix of international and German students which characterizes our program.

Students can choose to specialize on either the English-taught course program or on the German language courses.

Field Trip
Each semester a field trip to one major European institution (the EU-Commission and Representation in Brussels, the EU-Parliament in Strasbourg, the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, etc.) .

Language Requirements

Proficiency in German is not required. The principle teaching language is English. Applicants to the program whose primary language is not English and who currently attend a university where the language of instruction and examination is not English must submit an official score report of English proficiency (at least Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)). Accepted are:

  • à Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) with a minimum score of 80 
  • International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) (5,5) or equivalent tests.

How to apply

1. Ask your International Office to be nominated as an exchange student for the University of Cologne.

2. Nominated students will receive an information package from the University of Cologne and a link to our official application form.

3. If you have decided to participate in the Cologne Global Study Program “Contemporary European Studies“ you must select the program   on the online-application form.
