A. Summer Programs at Yale for International University Students
- 6 Week Intensive English Language Program
The Intensive English Language Program is for undergraduate and graduate students looking to advance their English language skills to pursue academic goals. The program is designed for intermediate to advanced level students. We therefore discourage students who are just beginning their study of English language.
- 6 Week Seminars for Graduate Students and Professionals
Candidates for admission to these six-week seminars should be at an advanced level of English language competency. The specialized graduate and professional courses are appropriate for the more advanced learner.
Yale's graduate and professional seminars are designed to address the language and discipline-specific needs of graduate students as well as law and business professionals. Students receive practice in the oral and written communication skills needed to succeed in graduate work, graduate management programs or advanced legal studies. Assignments are designed to provide orientation to vocabulary and concepts of the discipline and to give practice in the kinds of work that will be required of students.
- Postgraduate Student Seminar
- Business Seminar
- Law Seminar
- 5 Week Yale College Courses for Yale Credit
Yale Summer Session (YSS) offers two 5 week sessions during the summer. These courses are offered for undergraduate credit. Courses are offered in many disciplines. The work load is intense due to completing one semester’s worth of work (4 months) in 5 weeks. Students applying to take YSS courses must be able to demonstrate an advanced level of fluency in the English language, to include reading and writing.
Yale Summer Session staff can assist with academic advising to reduce the number of course changes once students arrive to campus. Choosing a course before the session begins is strongly recommended, as seats fill up as it gets closer to the start of summer session.
Students must submit the TOEFL, with a minimum score of 600 on the paper-based test, 250 on the computer-based test, or 100 on the internet-based test. TOEFL scores are current for 2 years, so please make sure your students submit current scores. Students may also submit the IELTS* (International English Language Testing System) test with a minimum overall band score of 7 is required.
In lieu of a test score, students may submit alternative evidence of English language proficiency, such as proof of attendance for at least four years at a secondary school where English is the primary language of instruction. Students taking YSS courses will also be required to submit a current official university transcript.
Because of the requirements of the visa, visiting international students taking YSS courses must choose two courses during the session they are attending Yale Summer Session. This is considered full-time study. Students must choose a total of 2 credits (two one-credit courses). Students may not choose a science course plus lab as full-time credit (1 ½ credits). Please communicate this to the students in your group as you assist them with course selection.
B. Online Courses
Yale Summer Session offers online courses in the summer. Students who are part of the group may take one online course as part of their two course requirement for their student visa. The second course must be a course on campus.
Students may choose an online course during the application process. Students will not be allowed to add an online course once the session begins. A short orientation and systems testing happens before the class begins to ensure all students have proper internet connections.
Students should think carefully about which classes they sign up for to avoid course changes one the session begins. Please advise students to contact us if they have questions about courses.
1. Students will complete and submit their own online application. Application instructions will be provided in an e-mail to you before the students apply online.
The following items will be uploaded by individual students into their application . They will create a login ID and password and will be able to upload all of their own materials.
1. Scan of the identity page of the student’s passport. The passport must be valid.
2. Financial information (one per student) The amount in the student’s bank statement must meet or exceed the total cost of the program. If your university provides one letter of support for the entire group, please give each student a copy of the letter so the student may upload that into his/her application. Make sure the letter lists the students’ names.
3. Proof of TOEFL or IELTS scores for YSS course applicants or proof that the student attends/ attended a high school where English is the primary language of instruction.
4. An official university transcript for students enrolling in the 5 Week YSS Course Program.
